Ling Ye is a yao. She rules over a city in the night and is the guardian beast protecting the entire city.
"Huh? Where'd this black cat yao come from?" Someone grabbed her by the scruff of her neck.
"Meow!" Where did this audacious fool come from?! How dare you sneak up on this guardian beast from behind! If you've got the guts, fight me one-on-one!
Ling Ye twisted around, trying to bite him.
"Guardian beast?" The man holding Ling Ye looked around in confusion at the remote mountain village, with only about thirty households.
"Hah." Got a problem with that?
Ling Ye lowered her voice and hissed.
"No problem." The man chuckled. "I'm Cang Kong, the head priest of a shrine. I'm recruiting people... Would you like to come work at my shrine as a shrine maiden?"
And so Ling Ye became a "shrine maiden."
But isn't this shrine a little too much like a ruin?
"It just needs a little time." Cang Kong earnestly painted a rosy picture. "As long as we work hard, we'll have money, and we'll have a shrine, too."
"Meow." Yeah, right. Like I'd believe you.
The shrine priest, Cang Kong, and a thousand-year-old black cat yao, Ling Ye, who was talked into becoming a shrine maiden.
