Voldemort gave him his first name, and the orphanage director gave him his surname. At eleven, Dumbledore noticed him and arranged for him to be adopted by a wizarding family. To please his adoptive parents, he gave up Slytherin and joined Gryffindor, becoming the fifth Marauder.
