Her mother died in childbirth.
Ning Tan was sent to live in another consort's palace when she was little. She knew how hard it was to survive in the palace, and was already happy if she could eat her fill, drink her fill, and stay alive.
Then came the third prince's birthday banquet, after which everything grew increasingly strange and complicated.
It seemed her mother's death might not have been as simple as the rumors claimed.
Ning Tan secretly investigated, only to meet a strange young man in the palace where her mother had once lived.
Dressed in white, with black hair and a chill radiating from him, he said nothing. Their eyes met for barely a moment before he shyly lowered his head.
Ning Tan: "?"

After that, wherever Ning Tan went, she often felt watched. A gaze seemed to cling to her with tangible heat, from day to night, day after day.
One night, Ning Tan stumbled upon several maids who had insulted her earlier that day, now lying unconscious on the ground. In the darkness, there was only a white figure that appeared and disappeared.
Only then did she realize he was a ghost. She ran away in fright, too.

Later, Ning Tan worked up the courage to look for him.
She searched the palace and finally spotted the familiar figure in an extremely secluded corner.
The young man had his head bowed as though someone had abandoned him. He curled up silently in the corner, tears hanging in his eyes. Who knew how long he had been there?
Ning Tan had no choice but to take him in and put him to work for her. Whenever she found herself in danger, he would somehow get her out of it.
But before long, just as her investigation had begun to turn up a few clues,
her dead mother came back to life.

*An experiment in plot-driven writing, with light horror and suspense (emphasis on light horror), focused on the heroine's growth.
*Other than the hero's identity, there are no supernatural elements.
*The male lead is an ultra clingy, puppy-like version with a severe case of lovesickness. No conquest needed. He falls for the heroine at first sight, loves sticking close and cuddling, and is neither weak nor timid.
*The setting is fictional by default. This is my first time trying this kind of story, so please forgive any rough spots.

Where the inspiration came from:
One night, my friend and I had either gone for a run around campus or were running back to our dorm when I suddenly remembered I'd never written a ghost character. So I started a new upcoming novel, and little by little, the idea for this story took shape!
