In the middle period of the Xie Dynasty, the late emperor passed away, and cries of mourning rang throughout the palace.
Outside the doors of the imperial coffin chamber, Empress Xu led Consort Shen and the other concubines. Dressed in mourning clothes, they knelt in rows. Nearly all of the concubines were young women in their early twenties.
After the state mourning ended, since Empress Xu had no children, the court officials could only follow the late emperor's secret arrangements for the succession. They designated Consort Shen's son as the heir to the throne.
