During the war between immortals and demons, the Demon Lord was defeated and transformed into a Chaos Demon Pearl, which attached itself to the immortal bones of Jing Yuan, a female immortal lord. This left her with weak magic and only half her immortal bones. By chance, she learned that she could restore her immortal bones at Changheng Mountain, so she went there to undergo trials. Along the way, she saved Shi Yi, who fell for her.
After they became disciples, their master, the venerable Liaowang, handed them over to Yan Gui, heir to Changheng Mountain, known as the mountain's biggest good-for-nothing. Jing Yuan was deeply unwilling and made things difficult for him at every turn, hoping he would give up and leave. They both fell for each other, but Yan Gui had descended to the mortal realm to find the Chaos Demon Pearl. When he learned that it had possessed Jing Yuan, he was torn. He didn't want her to die, so he kept it a secret. But Ling Shuyuan, a senior sister at Changheng Mountain, reported the truth to Master Liaowang. To save Jing Yuan's life, Yan Gui took only half her immortal bones. What he didn't know was that Jing Yuan's only half of immortal bones had already been lost for his sake. Jing Yuan begged him to spare her, but he had been born for the sake of the Five Realms. Though it broke his heart, he used the Divine-Demon Sword to cleave her soul apart.
After learning the truth, Yan Gui searched for five hundred years, trying only to gather the scattered fragments of her soul. While searching the demon realm, he discovered that the Demon Queen Jing Sheng was Jing Yuan, and tried to win her back. But the Demon Queen had not forgotten her past life, and was afraid of Yan Gui. She swore a divine oath never to meet him again. From then on, the two were separated by the ends of the earth, never to cross paths again.
