Megumi Fushiguro recently noticed that something seemed off about his shadow.
It seemed to be alive.
No, his shadow already had several living shikigami inside it.
But shikigami wouldn't pick up his pen when he dropped it in class.
They wouldn't try to come out of his shadow in the middle of the night while he was asleep to help with the housework.
They wouldn't make him breakfast, though what they made was a complete disaster.
After observing it for a long time, Megumi felt that it didn't seem like a shikigami from his technique.
He went to ask Gojo-sensei.
His teacher said, "Maybe your technique has mutated?"
If the Six Eyes said so, it was probably true.
He just didn't know whether it was a good mutation or a bad one.
Then one day, at the mission site, Megumi realized that the assistant supervisor had gotten the cursed spirit's grade wrong.
They'd mistaken a Quasi-Special Grade Cursed Spirit for a Grade 3 Cursed Spirit.
Unable to reach his teacher and carrying out the mission alone, Megumi felt like he was about to die here.
Megumi, still a middle schooler, shut his eyes in despair. Suddenly, his shadow began to writhe violently.
An unknown presence took shape inside the shadow, broke free of its restraints, and stood in front of Megumi.
"Hello there, my master."
So when Satoru Gojo finally arrived, he saw the remains of a cursed spirit fading away.
And two Megumi Fushiguros who looked exactly alike.
Satoru Gojo: "Wow."
Bonus Scene
Shadow: "The Divine Dogs all have names. Why am I the only one called Shadow?"
Megumi Fushiguro: "Because you appeared as a mutation. There was no record of you before."
Shadow (sadly): "Okay."
Megumi Fushiguro (thinking hard): "How about just Kage?"
Shadow: "Fushiguro Kage?"
Megumi Fushiguro: "Fushiguro?"
Shadow (matter-of-factly): "I'm your shadow, so of course I have to share your surname."
That does make sense?
And that's how Fushiguro Kage got his name.
