Alternate timeline: When Linlang rescued Ren Xin, suppose she told Jiu'er. Since it would have been difficult for Jiu'er and Ren Xin to uncover the truth with only what they knew back then, Ren Xin would still have left for a while. Jiu'er would have known all along that his master was alive, and stayed in An to work hard for her sake.
Content warning: The plot mostly follows the TV series, but removes the idea that Ren Ruyi would fall for Ning Yuanzhou. It also removes the plot point where Li Tongguang uses Noble Consort Chu. Before the leads meet, I've only changed the plot points I consider important.
These six years give them both a chance to grow.
