The Cat Courtesan Is Still a Force to Be Reckoned With

[Irreverent Version] What do you do when a customer takes a liking to you after you've washed your hands of the business and retired to the sidelines? Wen Chuyue rolled his eyes. "The shop's closed, thanks." [Serious Version] Many years ago, on a winter's day during a rare cold snap that even made the news, Wen Chuyue was still a cat when Song Bojian took him home. In the cramped rented apartment, the snow-white cat curled up beside a little space heater and fell asleep. Before long, he'd turned a pale yellow, like the soft center of a loaf of bread. Every time Song Bojian came home from school, it was like opening a mystery box. Sometimes he found a charred chocolate-colored cat; other times, a cat just starting to turn golden brown. When he had no choice but to go over and forcibly move the cat away, he was rewarded with a grumpy stream of complaints. Wen Chuyue thought they would share many springs, summers, autumns, and winters. In reality, they didn't even make it to their first spring together. Ten years passed in a flash, and the two unexpectedly reunited at a cat cafe. The slender, lean boy of years past had become a broad-shouldered, slim-waisted adult. His faded school uniform had been replaced by an expensive, sharply tailored suit. Wen Chuyue, too, had gone from being the cat cafe's beloved star cat to its new owner. Their eyes met, but there was no joy at being reunited in Wen Chuyue's beautiful eyes. All he remembered was the thick wad of pink bills he'd taken from Song Bojian when Song sent him away. - At his nephew's request, Song Bojian went to buy one of the cats at a cat cafe for him. But the moment he stepped inside, his attention was drawn to the owner. The young man's slightly long black hair fell around his neck, making his skin look even paler and his features even more delicate. Yet the expression he wore when he looked at Song Bojian was stiff and cold. How very much he resembled... the ill-tempered cat Song Bojian had kept as a boy.
