Chu Xu is a top employee in a transmigrate-into-a-book System, with a 99% mission completion rate. He only needs to finish one last task to choose a world in which to be reborn and live a life of lavish luxury.
This time, he transmigrates into a danmei novel, where he has to play the deeply devoted shou whom everyone despises.
A genius painter, Chu Xu appears to be the adopted son of the Chu family, but in reality, he was raised to be a powerful man's child bride. As soon as he comes of age, he's given to the protagonist gong as a substitute lover.
After being together for some time, Chu Xu has become utterly submissive. He's ignored at home and mocked outside. Once the pride of heaven, he's dragged into the dirt, sunk in gloom and almost driven to suicide.
After years of swallowing his grievances, he not only fails to win the man's heart, but ends up being abandoned.
On the day the protagonist gong marries his white moonlight, Chu Xu jumps into the river outside the wedding hotel, killing himself so he can be a good ex and make way for their love.
The transmigrated Chu Xu: “So I'm supposed to act lovesick? Got it.”
He starts acting like a lovesick fool in front of everyone.
The protagonist gong often stays away from home. When his younger brother watches for entertainment, Chu Xu lets the truth slip after a few drinks: “I really love him, even though he doesn't want to see me.”
The protagonist gong is fickle and unfaithful outside. When relatives and friends mock him, Chu Xu lets a few tears fall: “He's just lonely for a while. It's all my fault.”
The protagonist gong spends the night at his white moonlight's home. When the white moonlight sends a taunting message, Chu Xu replies gently: “His stomach is bad. Please take good care of him.”
At long last, the protagonist gong's wedding day arrives. Unable to contain his excitement, Chu Xu posts, “Even alone, you should live well,” then prepares to leave the world and make his escape.
But then his usually considerate friends suddenly speak up:
The protagonist gong's younger brother: “My brother wronged your sincere heart. I'll make it up to you in his place.”
The protagonist gong's rival: “Anyone who can't appreciate you has no taste. If you're upset, you can come to me.”
Even the protagonist gong's white moonlight changes his tune and breaks off the engagement. “You're free now. Go pursue true love.”
The plot suddenly goes off the rails. Chu Xu senses something is wrong and hurries to make his escape.
But the protagonist gong also acts completely out of character, grabbing Chu Xu and locking him up. Reeking of alcohol, his eyes bloodshot, he says fiercely, “Even if we break up, you're still mine. No one gets to take you away!”
Looking at the sudden increase in his System's remaining time and the friends coming to rescue him outside the door, Chu Xu is close to tears. “Weren't they all supposed to hate me? Why have they all fallen for me? How am I supposed to escape now?”
