Ten Years of a Widowhood Marriage

The day after their wedding, Gu Meng left for the border. He was gone for ten years.

For those ten years, Hua Yan cared for her parents-in-law and raised their child, changing from a pampered young princess into a reserved, austere lady of the household.

Just as she had nearly forgotten she even had a husband, Gu Meng returned, bringing a woman with him.

“Rou’s brother once saved my life. From now on, she’ll be like a sister to me.”

Not long afterward, Hua Yan saw Chen Rou throw herself into Gu Meng’s arms, crying with delicate, timid vulnerability.

Hua Yan understood. So she was his sweetheart.

Later, Gu Meng wanted to take Chen Rou as a concubine.

Her parents-in-law, who had always claimed to think of her as their own daughter, said, “Rou has a gentle nature. Even after she joins the family, she won’t threaten your position. You should be more understanding.”

Even the son she had raised said, “Mother, Aunt Rou is actually very nice.”

Hua Yan felt that the past ten years had been nothing but a joke. She thought of her cousin, who was still waiting for her and had never married.

“Let’s divorce.”

But she never expected her usually overbearing, stern husband to look at her with reddened eyes and draw their son close, his voice trembling with emotion.

“Yanyan, can you really bear to leave our child... and me?”
