Landing on a Winter's Night

Shu Ran fell in love with Xu Yanzhi as he stood onstage delivering a speech about the principles of flight. As she watched him from far away in the audience, what first came to mind was the boy tilting half his umbrella toward her on a rainy day.

Back then, Xu Yanzhi was the dazzling, exceptional top student at Fucheng No. 1 High School, far ahead of everyone else in both grades and family background.

She was the kind of person who faded into the crowd.

After graduation, Shu Ran wrote Xu Yanzhi a confession in a paper airplane, but then heard that one of her classmates had asked him how he felt.

The boy stood in the hallway, slender and coolly detached. "Shu Ran? What does it matter to me who she likes?"

After a flight accident, Shu Ran, an aviation doctor, unexpectedly reunited with Xu Yanzhi, who had become a well-known pilot.

The man had long been in a position of authority. His uniform was immaculate and distinguished, his expression cool, his air imposing.

Knowing Xu Yanzhi's personality, Shu Ran had assumed that once their work together ended, he'd become a stranger to her just as he had before.

Then one day, office gossip started going around that Shu Ran had had a crush on Xu Yanzhi in high school, but it had come to nothing and ended in regret.

When asked about the rumor, Shu Ran brushed it off. "I was young and didn't know any better. Besides, what does it matter to him if I liked him?"

After the rumors were cleared up, Shu Ran calmly glanced at Xu Yanzhi, as though nothing had ever happened between them.

That night, Xu Yanzhi trapped Shu Ran beneath his arm, his scent surrounding her with every breath. The man, usually so calm and clear-eyed, looked dark and unreadable. His voice was low. "What if I like you too? Would it matter then?"

Only later did Shu Ran discover that the paper airplane in Xu Yanzhi's book was the very one she'd thrown away after graduation.

She opened it, reopening all the feelings she'd kept hidden for him, only to find a line of powerful handwriting that had been added to the back of the plane at some point:

I looked your way countless times.

It turned out her unrequited love hadn't been a silent stretch of days and nights, but a brilliant, warm sun on the winter solstice.

Later, on the night of the first snowfall, Xu Yanzhi asked her, "Shu Ran, would you let me land by your side?"

"Unrequited love is an unsolvable question, and you are my only answer."
