Fake heiress x chief prosecutor
Bai Nian had known since childhood that she was a fake heiress.
She hadn't been switched at birth or replaced. She had been adopted, a stand-in for the real heiress.
But it was all right. She knew she was lucky.
Her luck had always come through at life's crossroads.
As a child, she was lucky enough to be rescued after a playmate pushed her into a pool. As a teenager, she luckily escaped bullying by cliques at her prestigious school, and always seemed to find study guides with all the right exam questions. In college, whenever she fell ill, started a business, or needed to rent a place, she would luckily win a prize drawing and get enough money to solve her immediate problems.
But when her family falsely accused her and dragged her into a financial crime case, her luck ran out.
With nowhere else to turn, a lawyer friend introduced her to a young chief prosecutor.
The man wore an immaculate uniform, his collar buttoned neatly to the top. Stern and proper, he seemed cold and unfeeling, though a tiny rose pinned to his breast pocket softened the impression.
"Miss Bai, you want me to help you?" The chief prosecutor's refined features were as lofty and untouchable as a supreme deity, offering charity to the fallen.
But he wasn't asking for nothing.
He smiled slightly, without a trace of pity or sympathy. This was nothing more than an exchange of benefits.
The chief prosecutor leaned close to her frightened face, his breath hot: "A marriage of convenience. We'll each get what we need."
...Just one more bit of bad luck in a life full of it.
I'm used to being unlucky. I don't care, Bai Nian thought.
She didn't care about being threatened, framed, or hunted. But she would get revenge.
Until her adoptive parents' company went bankrupt, and the real heiress, who had wanted to use her as a scapegoat, was sent to prison.
Bai Nian packed her bags and went to say goodbye to the man.
She was leaving the city. Their debts were settled, and she was ready to start over.
The man, who had always been calm and composed, lost his dignity. The plane tickets and agreement were torn to shreds, confidential prosecution office documents scattered across the floor, and Bai Nian was lifted onto an expensive, dark-red wooden desk.
It was hard and cold, as shiver-inducing as his imposing uniform.
Amid the chaos, his kiss and breath were burning hot as he murmured, "Niannian, look at me again."
Only much later did Bai Nian learn that it had always been him.
He had saved her from the swimming pool, protected her from bullying at school, and even carefully arranged her prize winnings so she wouldn't have to compromise herself for money in an unfamiliar city.
He helped clear her name, signed the documents to guarantee her release and see the process through, found connections to help her start her business, and even located her birth parents, from whom she had been separated.
Yet he asked for nothing, except for her to live the way she wanted.
