To my readers: This is the first novel I’ve unlocked in my seven years of writing on Jinjiang, and also the one I found most frustrating and painful to write. Lu Shi mourned his late husband for three years. As soon as the mourning period ended, his older brother and sister-in-law couldn’t wait to use him to pay off their gambling debts.

Lu Shi was having none of it. He beat the old bachelor so badly that the beads of his abacus went flying right into the man’s face.

The local authorities came to mediate and said they would take Lu Shi away to arrange a marriage for him.

In desperation, Lu Shi pointed beyond the crowd. “I’ll marry him.”

Everyone followed the direction of his finger and looked over.
