Slow burn / Childhood friends
The Ji and He families lived across the hall from each other. Ji Nian, the only son of the Ji family, was every inch a child of heaven. After he started school, his list of accolades only grew. He was famous for being distant and impartial, with an ironclad sense of justice.
He Sui comforted her deskmate, who had just lost points.
"Damn it, I have to find out what Ji Nian's weakness is." Her deskmate grabbed her, crying. "Sui Sui, do you know what his weakness is?"
That evening, when He Sui saw Ji Nian, she inexplicably remembered what her deskmate had said and asked curiously, "Do you have any weak... I mean, is there anything you're afraid of?"
Ji Nian gave her a rare, troubled look. "Are you trying to hurt me?"

A few days later, at a party, a group of young ladies and gentlemen played a game of 'I have something you don't.'
"I have a private island."
"I bought that pink diamond at the last auction."
"I put on a concert for my birthday last year."
When it was He Sui's turn, the sweet, quiet girl smiled with her eyes curving. "When I was five, I fell off the third-floor balcony and didn't die."
The party moved to another venue halfway through, and soon only the two of them were left in the private room. Ji Nian moved closer to her. "Why did you bring that up?"
Under the lights, He Sui's eyes were hazy with tears from the alcohol. Unconsciously, she leaned close to his ear and pressed herself against his chest, whispering, "I wanted to win."
Wiping away the tears spilling from her eyes, Ji Nian sighed inwardly. "You know better than anyone what I'm afraid of."
