Spring Night

In spring, while recovering from her injuries in the Jiangzhou countryside, Jin Ling saved a gravely wounded young man who was on the brink of death and possessed breathtaking beauty.

They made a deal: she would save his life, and he would stay by her side until she grew tired of him.

The young man did as she asked, willingly spending one reckless spring night after another with her.

One day, Jin Ling decided to leave Jiangzhou.

Before she left, the young man stood beneath a tree dappled with sunlight and asked her, "When will you come back?"

Jin Ling gazed into his shimmering eyes and raised a hand to hook a finger into his flimsy clothes, so thin they seemed ready to tear at a tug. Smiling, she asked, "I certainly won't be back in three or five days. So, will you wait for me and stay here?"

He lowered his eyes and gently shook his head, a faint blush quietly spreading across his ears. "Until you tell me it's over."

"I won't leave."

But she had no idea that after waiting three months, he would receive nothing but a letter from her. It contained only one sentence: You are free.

At that moment, as he savored the freedom he had long awaited, he poured himself a cup of wine brewed for her to taste when she returned. To his surprise, it tasted bitter.

Two years later.

In Qingzhou City stood a tavern whose bestselling wine was called A Moon Over the River.

That evening, Pei Xiu was busy working in the shop as usual. Hearing a customer arrive, he glanced over casually, only to spot a woman standing out among the crowd.

She still wore plain clothes and carried a long sword, looking every bit as carefree as before.

As he looked at her eyes, which held a trace of surprise, he thought: The wine she hadn't had a chance to taste back then had somehow made its way to her at last.

And the brief time they had spent together, along with the three months he had waited, which had haunted him over and over throughout the past two years, finally found resolution in that moment.

She was still alive. That was enough.
