In the thirteenth year of Huangchu, Yun Shao entered the capital to report to the emperor on matters concerning the frontier garrison.
Years ago, the Yun family of the borderlands and the Pei family, an illustrious clan in the capital, had arranged a betrothal between Yun Shao and Pei Fangjian before they were born. Yun Shao’s trip to the capital was also to marry.
Yun Shao had grown up on the frontier and admired strong, martial Qian Jun. The delicate, frail Pei Fangjian was not her ideal match.
She wanted to break off the engagement!
Pei Fangjian was mild-mannered and reserved. If the young lady of the Yun family didn’t agree, there was no harm in ending the engagement. That would be better than becoming a resentful couple.
After Pei Fangjian persuaded the elders of both families, Yun Shao was up in arms again. "I was young and reckless and didn’t know any better. Those words don’t count!"
Strength and valor were fine, but Elder Sister Pei was gentle, considerate, and talented, like a celestial goddess. She was the one Yun Shao truly loved.
Pei Fangjian thought she was just being childish and let the Pei family host grand banquets every day, inviting all the Qian Jun and unmarried young ladies in the capital.
Desperate, Yun Shao climbed over the wall into the residence and rushed up to Pei Fangjian, stammering that she didn’t want to break off the engagement.
"If we don’t end the engagement now, you’ll never have another chance to escape it for the rest of your life. A-Shao, have you thought this through?"
As Pei Fangjian asked, her gaze fell on the betrothal gifts already prepared in the distance. She was just waiting for Yun Shao to take the bait.
The land had been in chaos for over a hundred years. At last, the world was waiting for someone who could bring the turmoil to an end.
Many years later, Yun Shao stood by the river, drew her sword, and cried, "The day peace is restored is today!"
Even she had never expected that her path to the throne would begin with the betrothal of the thirteenth year of Huangchu.
