Li Huan was the daughter of a merchant family. Because of a betrothal arranged by their grandparents, she married Shen Junlan, a refined and elegant Grand Secretary of the Cabinet.
The Shen family was of high status. Though Li Huan was treated with courtesy by her husband, she was constrained by household rules and held to impossible standards by his relatives. Her life was far from happy.
She thought she would have to endure it forever. Then, unexpectedly, the Shen family was struck by disaster: their property was confiscated, and the entire clan was implicated.
Fearing she would be dragged down with them, Li Huan read the situation and insisted on obtaining a divorce agreement, planning to disappear under an assumed name.
She would never forget the contempt in Shen Junlan's eyes.
The following spring, Li Huan met a hunter.
He was ruthless, taciturn, tall, and cold.
Li Huan came clean about her past. “I've been married before.”
The man raised his eyes impassively and tossed her onto the bed.
Li Huan was terrified of him, but even simple meals and coarse tea made for a peaceful life. Then she heard that the Shen family's property had only been confiscated as a temporary measure to eliminate political rivals.
Afraid that Shen Junlan would take revenge on her, Li Huan begged the hunter to flee with her that very night.
“My marriage to Shen Junlan was arranged without love. I have no feelings for him. You're the one I've chosen.”
The hunter shot her a cold glance.
Li Huan couldn't read his temper, but still did everything she could to assure him that he was the only one for her, and that Shen Junlan had no place in her heart. Then she noticed the similarities between the two men.
Not sure. Better take another look.
The man sneered, his eyes as cold as they had been on the day she divorced.
A scheming beauty vs. a man who turns dark
Note: Shen Junlan and the hunter are the same person. He both loves and hates the heroine.
