Synopsis
Blurb One:
Ji Wan was on his way to a movie premiere when he saw his ex, Jiang Yibai. She was dressed in a sharp suit and hurriedly told the driver to stop. He asked his assistant, Su Fan, to explain things at the event, then ran toward Jiang Yibai.
Jiang Yibai was walking when she suddenly felt someone tap her back twice. She turned around. Ji Wan was standing there, panting.
The cafe by the roadside happened to be the one where they had first had a proper conversation.
She remembered saying, "I'm really glad I got to know you."
They sat down inside the cafe. Ji Wan's gaze fell on Jiang Yibai's slightly rounded belly, and he gave a cold laugh. "You're pregnant?"
Jiang Yibai nodded.
They sat facing each other in silence for a long time.
At last, Ji Wan broke the silence and asked through gritted teeth, "How are the prenatal checkups? Are you getting enough nutrition? Are you taking folic acid? Do you need a therapist?"
"You know I have a boyfriend."
Ji Wan fell silent again.
Jiang Yibai sighed helplessly. "Don't you have a premiere today? Hurry up and go. I'll go see it at the theater too."
"It doesn't matter."
"What?" Jiang Yibai couldn't believe her ears.
"The premiere doesn't matter!" Ji Wan said through gritted teeth again.
Jiang Yibai sighed once more and gazed blankly past Ji Wan. "Why can't you just let go?"
Ji Wan lowered his head. He had tried to let go, but he couldn't. How could anyone let go of someone they'd truly loved?
They finished their coffee in silence. Finally, Jiang Yibai stood up and said softly, "Take me home."
Ji Wan's heart leaped. Did that mean he'd still be able to pick her up at her home in the future? But he kept his expression calm. "I'll call a car."
After all these years of twists and turns, he could still stay by her side. Even if reality was a far cry from what he had once imagined, she was the first and only one for him. Wasn't that enough?
Blurb Two:
In Jiang Yibai's eyes, Ji Wan was an internationally acclaimed director, a brilliant talent, and a Hollywood celebrity. Jiang Yibai working for him was just a coincidence, the result of his political maneuvering with Paramount's executives.
But in reality, his father had never cared for him and his mother had never loved him. At twelve or thirteen, his family sent him to study in the United States, where he drifted alone in a foreign land. Asians in America were looked down on even if they were rich, famous, and educated. No matter how successful he became, he was always a lonely outsider.
Ji Wan had thought he would never feel a sense of belonging or love in this life, but fate brought him Jiang Yibai. He thought she was his salvation. It was only after she left his life that he realized she wasn't his salvation, but his undoing.
Years later, they met again at a film festival awards ceremony. As Ji Wan watched Jiang Yibai take the stage to accept her award, the whole world faded from his eyes in an instant, leaving only the smiling woman.
After the ceremony, he went to find her, full of questions. In the end, all he managed to ask was, "Are you doing well?"
With a polite yet distant smile, Jiang Yibai replied, "I'm doing well. It's been a long time." It turned out he was the only one who had spent all these years unable to forget.
They say life is like a chess game, and love is a contest. But with one move, he had lost everything. All those years had left him with nothing but a spine she had shattered piece by piece.
When you love, love until the seas run dry and the rocks crumble, until death do you part. Time, age, class, dignity, betrayal: none of them can make my love for you disappear or keep us apart. As long as we're alive, there's still hope.
