Once upon a time, there was a fox spirit named Bai Shu who fell in love with a human.
The human was Tu Yijin, the son of a local merchant. He wore pale blue robes embroidered with green bamboo, coughed softly, and spoke in a gentle, quiet voice.
He was so handsome, even more so than a fox spirit. Bai Shu gazed at him eagerly, wanting to ask if he would marry him.
Before long, Bai Shu had a spouse, but then another problem began to trouble him. It was simply in his fox nature: he couldn’t help looking at the beautiful people passing by, whether they were men or women.
Tu Yijin was very angry about it.
But Bai Shu was a fox. It was just his nature, and he couldn’t control himself.
He didn’t want to make Tu Yijin angry, so he hesitantly considered breaking up.
Before he could say a word, Bai Shu accidentally discovered that Tu Yijin had nine tails. He was stunned and planned to run away that very night.
“My mother said foxes can’t have a happy ending together, because they’re all lecherous!”
Tu Yijin had helped him withstand a tribulation, and now knelt on the ground with his remaining eight bloodied tails trailing behind him. He looked both sad and hurt. “Is it really impossible?”
The tips of his tails were red, and a flame-shaped mark adorned the center of his forehead. Injured, he looked even more beautiful, his fox eyes shimmering like spring waters.
...A beauty, wounded in battle.
Bai Shu’s eyes widened, and he gulped.
Bai Shu still couldn’t break his habit of looking at beautiful people.
One day, he made the same mistake again. Back in his true form, he coiled his huge, fluffy tail around Tu Yijin, trying to win him over. “But I’m a fox spirit. Fox spirits are born to seduce people. I can’t help it.”
Tu Yijin pushed his tail aside, took it in his hand, and stroked it from its glossy, silky base to the tip. Then, as punishment, he gave it a pinch. “...I’m a fox spirit too. How do you expect me to resist?”
With his tail pinched, Bai Shu curled his toes in pleasure. He glanced at Tu Yijin’s face and asked in the tiniest voice, “You resisted, so why were you wrapping your tail around me?”
“...”
Tu Yijin had noticed the little fox who sat around doing nothing in the schoolroom a long time ago. He had only just taken human form and cultivated a single tail, yet dared to pursue someone so far out of his league.
The one and only nine-tailed red-marked fox demon in heaven and earth, carrying a young man’s heart that beat wildly in his chest, had agreed with becomingly restrained composure.
