Newlyweds

Rong Hua had been married into the Xie household for three years, but her husband was like a ghost: she'd heard of him, but never seen him. On their wedding night, before he could even lift her veil, he went off to war.

Now that Xie Ci'en had returned, the Old Madam of the Xie family refused to let him leave again, insisting that he have a child or two.

So Rong Hua, who had spent three years lazing about at a temple under the pretense of praying for blessings, was brought back.

At their first meeting, Rong Hua finally understood that the book's description of him as "jade-like in appearance and breathtakingly handsome" was no exaggeration.

Xie Ci'en was just as direct, making no effort to hide his intentions. "I want to have a child with you."

Rong Hua tapped her fingertips, her face pink as a peach. "It's not out of the question, but a thing like that should require some affection between husband and wife."

Xie Ci'en: ?

Later, after their child was born, whenever Xie Ci'en talked about leaving home to make a name for himself, she'd always take his hand and weep pitifully. "If you leave for three or four years again, the child won't even recognize you as their father when you come back."

Xie Ci'en steeled himself and stayed.

But he always felt something wasn't quite right.
