Consorts of the Xianfu Palace

The Wei family was born with a cold, aloof air, yet she had a beauty mark between her brows.

She was merely a palace maid tasked with sweeping and cleaning, but she refused to accept a fate that would leave her trampled into the dust.

Her sisters who entered the palace alongside her failed to escape the eunuchs' leering advances, and were hanged to death.

Treading carefully, Wei gave up on trying to please anyone. She set her sights on Zhao Zhongxian, the eunuch beside the palace steward, who was especially skilled at honeyed words and a dagger hidden behind his smile.

Zhao Zhongxian had always despised the practice of eunuchs taking male companions, yet he felt pity for a little palace maid with the face of a Bodhisattva and the heart of a snake.

At first, he thought he had simply been bewitched by her beauty. He also hoped she could help him rise to power and secure wealth and glory through two reigns.

Who could have guessed that one day he would be willing to abandon wealth and power, asking only for blue skies and clear seas, and to share tender nights with her?

Wei Wenji clawed her way up to the position of Imperial Consort, but Zhao Zhongxian began to defy her. He wanted to keep the child that carried his blood.

How could she possibly allow him to hold such leverage over her?

By the time he rushed to her side, her skirts were soaked with blood and nothing could be done. She still smiled radiantly.

"Didn't you love me most of all? There can be no one else between us, not even a child."
