As everyone knows, no one is allowed to become a spirit after the founding of the nation.
But Huaguo has thousands of years of history, and there are always spirits and monsters blessed by heaven and earth who cultivate themselves into human form and blend into human society. It would hardly do to die on the spot over an unwritten rule.
So the Special Affairs Bureau of Huaguo arranges adult certification exams at the end of every quarter. Any spirit or monster that passes can receive a human identity certificate.
Once they have one, they are no longer wild monsters without a legitimate identity.
However, not every monster can get their certificate without a hitch.
If they don't want to become undocumented, there's only one solution...
Dessert shop owner Shu Lanyu recently landed a new job. The work could be described as complicated or simple, depending on how you put it.
To explain the complicated version, he has to straighten out a few little monsters who have already gone astray, helping them pass the adult certification exam and get their human identity certificates.
Simply put, he has to help the little ones adapt quickly to human society and escape their undocumented status.
Shu Lanyu's mouth twitched as he pointed at the thousand-year-old monster who had appeared outside with the person in charge. "This is a little one too?"
The thousand-year-old monster, Yin Zhao, opened his mouth in a huge yawn, sparks flickering inside.
The person in charge broke out in a cold sweat. "I can explain."
Shu Lanyu held up his hand and rubbed his thumb and forefinger together. "That'll cost extra."
Even the Special Affairs Bureau couldn't expect him to work for free.
The person in charge glanced at the old monster, who had slept for over a thousand years, been forcibly woken up, and was still in the middle of a bad case of morning grumpiness. He sighed deeply to himself: I can't afford to offend either of them.
As it happened, this fellow had long since fallen out of touch with human society. Aside from his good looks, he seemed like a senile old man, but still didn't understand his situation. He glanced at Shu Lanyu. "Are you here to wait on me?"
The person in charge clutched his head. Help!!!
Shu Lanyu's gentle smile didn't waver. "So he's an idiot too."
The great monster didn't know what "idiot" meant, but his instincts told him it wasn't a compliment. He opened his mouth, sending sparks flying everywhere.
Shu Lanyu narrowed his eyes and raised a barrier. Damn, I might not be able to beat him!
The person in charge sucked in a sharp breath and stepped between them, his legs trembling. "P-please, both of you, wait!"
He's just an employee. Does this count as a workplace injury?
Shu Lanyu * Yin Zhao (let's say it's a pairing of a smart, happy-to-be-receiving type with a clueless, grumpy-on-top type)
The story contains a lot of original worldbuilding, mainly concerning the protagonist's origins.
Some characters are based on settings from The Classic of Mountains and Seas and other sources.
Modern alternate universe.
Lighthearted, slice-of-life, with little main plot.
Coming soon:
When You Open Your Eyes, You Throw Up
After Chi Nuo'en jumps into a river to save someone, an unknown force drags him into another world.
When he opens his eyes again, he has become the eldest son of the Capet family, the least welcome member of the household. His father doesn't care for him, his stepmother doesn't love him, and he has neither enough to eat nor warm clothes to wear.
Chi Nuo'en can put up with all that, but having something wrong with his eyes is really enough to make anyone fall apart, isn't it?
No matter where he is or when it is, whenever he opens his eyes, he can see a world covered in countless tiny dots...
And the damn things move!!
Chi Nuo'en: "Ugh..."
This kid has it so rough QAQ.
What unlucky transmigrator gets saddled with such a severe case of trypophobia?
Heh, turns out it's the same old unlucky me.
What a catastrophic start. I might as well be blind.
There's no way he can stay with the Capet family. Struggling through a sea of tiny dots, Chi Nuo'en tries to plan an escape route.
"Little one, where do you think you're going?" A man leaned against a tree, his pale gray-green eyes studying Chi Nuo'en for a long time, a roguish smile playing at his lips. "Running away without permission isn't something a good child does."
The man closed in step by step, pinched his chin, and stared into his eyes. With a seductive sigh, he said, "What an extraordinary gift..."
Chi Nuo'en forced a polite smile onto his gaunt little face. "Heh."
NMP!
What gift? Your ass!
"But..." The man's fingers brushed Chi Nuo'en's cheek. "Let's take care of your malnutrition first."
Chi Nuo'en: Sorry, I cursed you too soon.
The magic academy, the map of the continent, the struggles and schemes among the various factions: all of it gradually unfolds before Chi Nuo'en. Amid all this chaos, an invincible force quietly descends upon the world.
The divine spark shatters, and divine desire spreads.
Chi Nuo'en turned to leave, but the man grabbed him by the collar. His voice, full of amusement and warning, rang by Chi Nuo'en's ear. "Trying to run now? You might be a little late."
Chi Nuo'en raised a trembling hand. "Actually, I'm the self-sacrificing type. Would you believe me?"
