Two years ago, the death of the Port Mafia's former leader, Dazai Osamu, seemed to shatter some kind of balance, plunging Yokohama into two years of chaos. The Guild, the Rats in the House of the Dead, the Order of the Clock Tower, the Decay of the Angel, and other powerful organizations all came swarming in pursuit of the Wish-Granting Machine, said to be capable of granting any wish.
Even with the Armed Detective Agency and the Special Division for Unusual Powers working together, they couldn't hold back the endless opportunists and those who coveted the machine.
Fortunately, whenever Yokohama's defenders were at their wits' end, one coincidence or miracle after another would help them escape disaster and defeat each new wave of enemies. That was the only reason Yokohama survived one escalating catastrophe after another. It all suggested that some invisible hand was manipulating events. The hand behind it all seemed to have the ability to see the future, anticipating the attacks of the various factions and laying a vast net to ensnare outsiders years in advance.
It took Edogawa Ranpo a long time to trace the source of everything back to Dazai Osamu, the former leader of the Port Mafia.
Two years later, an entity known as the Book brought everyone into an alternate space and invited them to witness Dazai Osamu's past. It seemed that everything had changed.
Pairing: Soukoku! Soukoku! Soukoku! The former boss Dazai has very little screen time early on. There's a Flags arc, a Verlaine arc, and an Adam doting-on-Chuuya arc. The plot where everyone dotes on former boss Dazai only appears much later, since Dazai doesn't come back to life until way, way later! Until then, he only appears in memories.
There may also be some Akutagawa and Atsushi, and Verlaine and Rimbaud, but very, very, very little.
To make sure nobody says the title is misleading, let me repeat: the main pairing is Soukoku, Soukoku, Soukoku. It's a plan to save Dazai, but Dazai himself doesn't take part.
