Undercurrents

On the evening study period after Yan He dropped from the honors class to the regular class for missing an exam, he walked into the classroom and slumped over his desk without moving. His body trembled as if he were crying.

After a while, his new deskmate, Ling Mian, reached out and poked his arm.

Ling Mian: "You're keeping me from sleeping."

Yan He turned his head, revealing only half his face.

Ling Mian lowered his eyes and pushed a small packet of tissues in front of Yan He.

"Why are you giving me tissues?" Yan He asked, confused. "You think I'm crying?"

Ling Mian looked as if he knew everything. "Don't be embarrassed. You were just making little cat noises while you cried."

Yan He: "..."

Ling Mian: "?"

He wondered if the tissues would expire if he didn't use them all today.

Yan He finally lost patience and unzipped his school jacket right in front of Ling Mian.

A little white cat's head poked out of the jacket and gave a soft meow.

The kitten's round eyes made it look adorable and clingy, the complete opposite of his fierce, handsome deskmate.

Ling Mian pulled a tissue from his bag and held it in front of the kitten's face, teasing it. "Here, let big bro wipe the sleep from your eyes."

Yan He gave him a look that was hard to describe. "I'm planning to raise this cat as my son."
