My name is Sugawara Umeko. My birth name was Hongmei.

I was a lowly dancer during the Tang Dynasty. Through a twist of fate, I left my home and followed an envoy to Japan. On my way to deliver a gift to the fiancee of the man I loved, I was attacked by a demon. When I awoke, I was locked in a dungeon.

For decades, my "demon blood" was sealed, and I was fed the blood of Sugawara no Michizane, the head of the Sugawara clan, who would later be known as the greatest of Japan's four vengeful spirits.

Human lives are short. After Sugawara no Michizane died, I became the only demon in the world able to overcome the sun, and the Sugawara clan's hidden guardian deity. I thought all I had to do was hide behind the shrine and accept offerings every day. Who would have thought that I, the oldest in both age and seniority, would also be tasked with raising children?

When the clan head's duties wore me out, I would occasionally pick a fight with Muzan.

Muzan kept avoiding me, so I planned to run away from home. Not only did I get lost along the way, I was also tricked into becoming a wet nurse for a baby with four arms and two pairs of eyes.

The little one's helpless tantrums were adorable, but after raising him for a while, he became a nuisance. I pulled out a hairpin as a parting gift and slipped away without a word.

But as soon as I returned to the Sugawara clan, they bundled me off to support the Demon Slayer Corps. The former clan head had died not long ago, Butterfly Dance had been destroyed, and several Hashira had fallen to Upper Rank demons while protecting the new head as they retreated. So I returned to my old line of work: raising clan heads.

Countless days and nights passed. The Sugawara clan became the Gojo clan, and the Ubuyashiki family continued its struggle against evil demons for thousands of years.

And I was still alive.
