The Miss Is Quite Capable

Ding Ning was orphaned at the age of four, and her entire family was exiled to a bitterly cold frontier. Her maternal cousin, the wife of the Guangde Marquis from the Du family, treated her concubines cruelly and had a terrible reputation. She kept Ding Ning in her household to earn herself a little praise for charity, but in truth treated her like a servant.

Who could have guessed that when this young cousin grew up, she would not only have a melodious voice and peerless beauty, but also become the most capable young woman in the capital? So many people came to ask for her hand that they wore down the threshold, and her cousin became known throughout the capital as a virtuous woman.

The Du family had two sons. The elder brother was a modest gentleman, warm and gentle as jade. The second brother was cold as the moon in a painting, proud and aloof. Both were perfect men secretly admired by the young ladies of the capital.

But Ding Ning thought that if those young ladies really married them, they would suffer in the future.

In truth, both brothers had their flaws.

The elder brother insisted on propriety in everything. Whenever they met, he would say, "That lipstick is too bright. How unbecoming!" "Your handwriting lacks spirit. How unbecoming!" "Going out in public every day. How unbecoming!"

The second brother, on the other hand, was like a silent shadow. He rarely spoke, but always liked to come to her room and sit there all day.

The Du family's younger daughter was one year younger than Ding Ning and often complained that the two brothers had been stolen away from her.

Ding Ning knew, though, that while they called her their younger sister, in their hearts they had always treated her as a guest.

Until one day, when Madam Du truly planned to arrange a marriage for her, and both brothers' faces changed at once.
