"I would defy the Heavenly Dao and give you a place to return to."

Clever, bold, adorable dream-weaver x cold, obsessive, arrogant ghost judge

Have you ever heard of "sending someone a dream"?

No matter how hard people struggle all their lives, they cannot escape their fate.

Grievance-ridden souls send dreams because they cannot let go of an obsession, died under mysterious circumstances, or have something left unresolved.

Dream-weaving is a profession that takes a soul from a ghost and gives a dream to the living.

Unlike other ghosts, Jun Xiang has no memories of her past life and is missing two souls.

With the underworld's prevailing practice of trading work performance for cultivation, she works herself to the bone, but sees little return. Worse, entering the minds of the dead to peer into their memories puts her life in danger!

And that isn't even the worst of it. Her boss is Feng Yang, the underworld's most overworked judge, so from then on, she has to work all year round. A 24/7 schedule is just business as usual.

Jun Xiang: Seriously, if I can slack off, I will. Who wants this soul-crushing job anyway?

But why are there so many vengeful ghosts? QAQ

As the underworld's newly appointed judge, Feng Yang has no memories of his life before death. Cold and impartial, he has gone a hundred years without a single vengeful ghost on his record and won the underworld's Best Judge award several times.

But why have there been so many vengeful ghosts these past few days?

He makes a surprise inspection and discovers the culprit: his dream-weaver subordinate has been slacking off.

That won't do. To protect his year-end bonus, he decides to supervise her personally.

But at some point, whenever she gets hurt, his heart gives a sudden pang.

Whenever he looks at her dark-red dress, he can almost recall a blurry figure from a thousand years ago, dressed in white with red wrapped around her, singing a song of longing that suddenly brought him to his senses and returned his earth soul to him.

*

Legend has it that the God of Divine Fire, Gui Yao, ascended through the path of ruthless cultivation. A devoted divine general accompanied her, and after working together for ten thousand years to create the Heavenly Dao, the two gradually fell in love.

But over the years, the Heavenly Dao gained consciousness and stole one of Gui Yao's souls while she was unprepared.

After her cultivation path was shattered, Gui Yao underwent a trial of love in one lifetime. She died with no memories and became a lonely wandering ghost, wearing a wedding dress as she roamed the world for a thousand years.

She once thought the world was dull and lifeless, until a pair of hands gently lifted the red veil covering her head. A judge's brush lightly touched the space between her brows. That was the first time she ever saw light.

Later, she passed the civil service exam to become a dream-weaver and was given the name Jun Xiang. She worked alongside him, only to discover that Judge Feng Yang was not heartless after all.

Yet for some reason, the figure who was always protecting her from behind seemed strangely familiar.

Only when that person's heavenly soul returned did he corner her against the wall, his eyes bloodshot. He pressed close to her ear, his voice hoarse.

"You really don't remember?"

Bonus scene:

[After completing a mission] Jun Xiang: "My lord, do you think they'll meet again in their next lives?"

Feng Yang said coldly, "Life, death, and marriage are decided by fate. They are not our concern."

[In the Hall of Yama] Feng Yang [frantically searching the Book of Life and Death for good deeds]: "Though your life was not without sin, in consideration of your merits, I grant you another life as a human!"

*

On the Bridge of Helplessness, a young man in white held the soup of forgetfulness to his lips, but could not bring himself to swallow.

Jun Xiang knew she was about to get another case.

"I wish to send a dream to my wife. I wonder if you could..."

"Please close your eyes, sir." She took up her magic brush and lightly touched his brow. Then she could glimpse the entanglements of his past life and uncover the obsessions he had yet to resolve.

*

Chen Wanchu, a well-known reporter on a certain website, dies in an accident while covering a story and transmigrates to the Qianlong era. She becomes Consort Wan Chen, who would outlive Qianlong.

At the time, Qianlong has only just ascended the throne, and she is still a low-ranking concubine.

So, in an era famous for its cutthroat competition for imperial favor, one clear-eyed person joins the fray.

Keep a level head and live to ninety-nine!

But spending every day playing mahjong and chatting with her friends, and helping them look after their babies, is just too dull.

She picks up her freshly made taro milk tea with tapioca and takes a long sip~

*

"Hey, have you heard? Consort Chun pushed Noble Lady Bai down the stone steps, and Noble Lady Bai miscarried on the spot!" one of her friends says.

"Consort Chun is on her knees in front of the Hall of Mental Cultivation right now, crying that she's innocent!"

[Beep beep~ Congratulations, Host, you've been bound to the Harem Rescue System.]

[Complete missions to receive the corresponding rewards~]

At that, Chen Wanchu rushes to the scene, returning to her old career of chasing stories and interviewing the people involved.

She discovers that there is more to Noble Lady Bai's miscarriage than meets the eye.

Moreover, the harem is full of intrigue and ridiculous wrongful accusations. To uphold justice (and complete her missions), she anonymously starts the Palace Gossip Gazette. She investigates scandals, solves cases, and makes a fortune selling papers.

The next day, the gossip about Noble Lady Bai's miscarriage makes the front page of the Palace Gossip Gazette. Every consort in the palace gets a copy, and the whole harem is in an uproar!

The newspaper lays out its clues and evidence clearly. Under pressure from public opinion within the palace, the empress orders an investigation, and it turns out to be true!

Consort Chun: What is going on? I've been exonerated just like that?!

*

Three months after founding the Palace Gossip Gazette, Chen Wanchu has earned a fortune and received a reward from the System. She wolfs down a freshly made plate of big-plate chicken, oil smudged on her cheek.

Suddenly, the System crackles to life:

[Congratulations, Host! Mission complete. Reward: promotion +1.]

An edict promoting her to Noble Lady arrives, along with a generous reward.

Well, would you look at that! This is practically winning without lifting a finger!

As she keeps enjoying her easy life, she suddenly realizes that she isn't the only person in the palace who transmigrated here!

The first to show up is the fake heiress: "Sister, could I have your autograph?"

Chen Wanchu: "?"

Wasn't the fake and real heiress in the book supposed to fight to the death?

Next comes her second brother, who works in the entertainment industry: "Little sister, I've got a family variety show. You're coming with me!"

Chen Wanchu: "??"

Wasn't this brother supposed to hate her and even threaten to curse her out every time he saw her?

Even her birth parents come knocking: "Wanchu, you're finally home!"
