The Daughter of the Man Pretending to Have Amnesia

The Lower City, Snail Alley, drenched in black rain.

On her way home from school, beside a trash can, a girl spotted a man sprawled on the filthy ground. He had striking features, an imposing air, and clothes made from expensive fabric.

They say you shouldn't pick up a man off the street, but fortune favors the bold, and she was greedy by nature.

The man she brought home had lost his memory. She decided to lie, but she wasn't going to pretend to be his fiancee.

When the man opened his eyes, dry artificial light fell across his eyelids through a blurry glass window. His neck itched faintly from an allergy. An unfamiliar young girl leaned in close, the scent of cheap shampoo filling his nose, and said, "I'm your daughter."

If he were absurd enough, perhaps he could have fathered a daughter this old when he was only a teenager.

The man took her to the Upper City, claimed she was the heiress of a wealthy family, and ushered her into the dazzling, bizarre world of high society.

She was nervous, yet daring enough to defy all reason. Even knowing her false identity was as flimsy as a sheet of window paper, she still wanted to keep up the act for as long as she could. One more day was one more day.
