[Sweet, indulgent romance with a growing heroine]
When Yun Tuan was eight, her parents and elder brother died in a terrible fire.
With nowhere else to turn, Yun Tuan went to seek refuge with her betrothed, Zhao Shi Yu, the Marquis of Wu An, a match arranged before she was even born.
Unfortunately, Zhao Shi Yu already had someone he had privately pledged himself to, though they could not yet marry or make their relationship public. The Zhao family matriarch was also eager for a great-grandchild and couldn’t wait for Yun Tuan to grow up, so the engagement had to be called off.
So, for the time being, they could only raise her.
When Zhao Shi Yu first met Yun Tuan, her little face was rosy and sweet. Just like her name, she looked like a little dumpling waiting to be fed.
So he came up with all sorts of roundabout schemes to bring her various pastries and feed them to her.
As Zhao Shi Yu kept feeding her, Yun Tuan slowly grew up. He dealt with anyone who bullied her, and he also dealt with anyone who hovered around her with improper intentions.
But just as Yun Tuan finally came of age, Zhao Shi Yu’s relationship with his sweetheart fell apart. And the girl he had raised with his own hands was about to marry another man.
For some reason, Zhao Shi Yu felt an ache in his heart. Fighting back his bitterness, he stopped Yun Tuan and said, “You ungrateful little wretch. You let someone else whisk you away just like that?”
Bonus Scene:
After Yun Tuan started attending the academy, Zhao Shi Yu continued sending her pastries as usual. But before long, she began returning every last one.
Zhao Shi Yu was puzzled. One day, when he had some free time, he decided to go to the academy and find out what was going on.
When he arrived, he saw one young man after another trailing behind Yun Tuan, all chatting and coaxing her to eat their pastries.
Yun Tuan’s almond-shaped eyes curved as she ate, looking quite pleased.
Zhao Shi Yu appeared in front of her with a dark expression.
The young men hurried over to curry favor with him. “Hello, big brother.”
Suppressing his anger, Zhao Shi Yu picked Yun Tuan up and brought her back, then asked, “Aren’t the pastries I send you as good as theirs?”
Yun Tuan looked aggrieved. “The pastries you send are better, Brother Yu, but I really can’t eat any more!”
