[My new book is now available on my profile: “After Marrying the Emperor of an Enemy Nation, I Ran Away Pregnant.” Plenty of chapters are ready, with a steady update schedule. Please add it to your favorites.]
A bold, clever businesswoman and heiress versus a noble, aloof young lord
In her previous life, Jiang Ningchu was fabulously wealthy. She devoted herself to work and knew nothing of love. Her relationship with her fiancé was nothing special. All she wanted was to make money and become the richest woman in the capital. While she worked hard, her half-sister seized the opportunity to sleep with her fiancé and conspire to take the family fortune, then drowned Jiang Ningchu in a river.
Given another chance at life, Jiang Ningchu decided to get revenge on the adulterous pair, stay away from men, and thrive on her own.
She exposed her fiancé’s schemes and sent her half-sister to prison.
After a clash, the young lord of the Duke’s mansion came knocking with an ulterior motive. They both had their own agendas and made use of each other.
Having gained another life, Jiang Ningchu was clear-eyed enough to know that men were all wolves hiding their tails. They could only yelp foolishly, then sneak off and pilfer the silver she held dear.
The schemer entered the game first. The young lord, certain he had everything under control, ultimately fell before the beautiful woman who was cold on the outside and soft-hearted within, and willingly became her devoted servant.
Xie Youheng smiled and said,
“I can’t bear to see a beauty cry.”
And so he helped her take revenge on her faithless fiancé.
Later, when the land fell into chaos, Xie Youheng protected Jiang Ningchu from harm with a single declaration: “She’s mine.”
Later still, Jiang Ningchu opened restaurants, built music houses, sponsored musicians, dug hot springs, and rebuilt city towers. Her name rang throughout the country. When people talked about the married couple, the Duke of Xie’s young lord and his wife, they would likely begin with the young lady’s heroic deeds, while the mighty young lord became an afterthought.
He said, “My wife is famous far and wide. How could I dare disobey her?”
She replied, “Good. You know what’s good for you. Go fetch the foot-washing water.”
They say women should obey the Three Obediences and Four Virtues. Jiang Ningchu scoffed. “Money is far more practical.”
With a wave of her hand, she could buy a whole building. With another, she could own a whole city.
She told Xie Youheng fiercely, “Young Lord, your betrothal gifts have arrived.”
Xie Youheng gazed at her adoringly. “Yes, my dear benefactor.”
Theme: Women should be self-reliant
