What is a hostage prince?
The eight hundred vassal lords of the east, west, south, and north each sent one of their sons to serve in the Great Shang as a hostage. These were known as hostage princes.
If any vassal lord dared to rebel, his hostage prince would be killed first, and then his entire clan would be exterminated.
