Chen Yanqiu was staying with his second uncle when he rescued an injured kitten.
Though Chen Yanqiu barely had enough food or warm clothes for himself, he gritted his teeth and kept the kitten alive.
The kitten had orange-and-white fur and a pair of round, green eyes. Chen Yanqiu squeezed its pink paw and named it Danruo.
From then on, Chen Yanqiu was never alone on his way home from school. Danruo would carry his little ball in its mouth and run to the door to greet him.
Kittens care about people. Kittens are good.
But Chen Yanqiu lost his beloved Danruo.
When he found Danruo, the abused cat was in even worse shape than when they first met.
But the moment Danruo smelled Chen Yanqiu, he struggled to his feet, rubbed against him one last time, then closed his eyes in Chen Yanqiu's arms.
That night, Chen Yanqiu buried his Danruo and stayed with him for a very long time.

Many years later, Chen Yanqiu had risen through the ranks and been reassigned to Yingzhou as its governor. His subordinates tried to curry favor with him by presenting him with a beauty from the Western Regions.
The cool, self-possessed Governor Chen was about to send the man away when he met his round, green eyes.
The green-eyed beauty immediately leaped into Chen Yanqiu's arms, as if he had done it countless times before, and smiled mischievously. “Where did you put my little ball?”

Danruo was a cat spirit. He'd had no name and was a free, carefree stray. Though an elder had awakened his intelligence, he was always lazy about cultivation and could barely transform into human form. Other than having many lives, he was good for nothing.
When he was covered in wounds, he came to live among humans. A human rescued him and gave him a name.
He thought he'd spend his whole life with that human, but instead he lost a life for him.
After crawling out of the pit, the first thing Danruo did was learn to transform.
He had to find Chen Yanqiu!
