Shen Shiqi, a modern-day college student with the worst luck, transmigrates to ancient times and begins a life of hitting one wall after another.
The only thing Shen Shiqi is good at is studying. The problem is that he studied chemical engineering and technology, an engineering subject.
So, in order to make a living in the future and give his benefactor Shen Binglan's family some support, he keeps studying.
It's just that his awful luck is a bit of a worry. The household registration issue alone is enough to drive him crazy.
After finally managing to study for a few years, he's about to head to the capital for the imperial exams when bandits strike. His classmate Liu Qing passes the exams and comes first, while Shen Shiqi stays behind to defend their hometown.
He plans to go to the capital for the exams the following year, but an order summons him to the army.
He can manage the army too. After a few years, just as he's about to receive his reward for his service, he's sent off to become some kind of military governor. His hidden mission is to find the lost Imperial Sword.
After wandering around for a few years, Shen Shiqi finally figures it out.
Why does he have to become some high-ranking official? He's a provincial graduate with military service, and even has a record of serving as a military governor. He's got money too. He can live just fine as an ordinary person!
Resign! Go home!
But when he returns to his hometown, he finds it empty. His family had already moved to the capital the year he joined the army.
The unlucky old Shen Shiqi takes it calmly and heads to the capital to find his family.
On the way, he rescues a poor little baby, only to run into a crazed squad of assassins.
After finally arriving, he's mistaken for a stand-in and is in danger of being beheaded and sentenced to death at the slightest slip.
Just destroy the world already! Hurry up! I don't want to live one second longer!
But he can't figure it out! Why is he so unlucky? Surely it can't be this bad!
After looking into it, he discovers that the rumor in the army, "The new top scholar intends to marry his classmate, but the Imperial Tutor is doing everything in his power to stop him," is true!
Not only is it true, but the two main characters are him and his classmate Liu Qing!
And apparently the current prime minister, Lord Liu Qing, has been deeply in love with him for years.
Unlucky old Shen Shiqi: What a vicious accusation! I'm not taking the blame!
The city is full of tricks, so Shen Shiqi wants to go back to the countryside. But his bad luck strikes again: just as he leaves the city gate, he's dragged back to get married!
