The Foil in This Period Novel Just Wants to Enjoy the Show

Two young wives married into Linxia Village, and they were practically polar opposites. One was hardworking and capable, handling everything inside and outside the home. The other was lazy, greedy, and shameless, doing nothing but watching dramas and snacking on melon seeds. One cared for her two stepchildren with the utmost attention. The other refused to lift a finger, not even to wash a single bowl. The villagers all said Lin Qiao was the one who knew how to make a marriage work, and that she would follow her husband to the army and enjoy a good life. As for Cheng Xia... She'd be sent back to her parents' home in disgrace sooner or later! Sure enough, just after daybreak, Lin Qiao had already made breakfast for her stepchildren, grabbed her hoe, and headed out to the fields. Cheng Xia slept until late morning, then sat in the courtyard cracking melon seeds while watching her stepson do the laundry. The six-year-old boy scowled. A fading bruise still marked his left cheek. "Once you've washed all this, tell me how to make sure I don't have to do it, and how to make Er Pang look like an idiot too." Cheng Xia hummed as she scrolled through the gossip System that had transmigrated here with her. "He wet the bed last night, and his quilt is still hanging out in the yard." Yikes, his dad was also having an affair with Li, the widow from the neighboring village. A dog had even chased his shoe right off! She couldn't tell a little kid that. Cheng Xia scrolled further. "I need to sell that old ginseng root we dug up yesterday. I'll bring back some meat for you. If you can heat up your own lunch, I'll tell you where Xiaohu hid the eraser he stole from you." When Colonel Jiang heard that his son was being mistreated by his new wife, he hurried back from the army. The moment he entered the village, a chubby little boy in overalls stopped him. He was fairer and plumper than before. "My dad hasn't been home for years. He probably isn't coming back. Would you marry my mom and be my new dad?" Colonel Jiang: "..." Core message: Treat people with sincerity, and they will surely return it with sincerity.
