Qi Shi was just grunting away while digging for wild vegetables when a rushing flood swept him away and drowned him.
He opened his eyes, stretched out a paw, and howled at the sky. Huh?
Why had his hands turned into chubby little paws?!
Qi Shi sighed at the inevitability of fate and let out a series of howls. He whined that he was hungry, still howling away.
Could things get any worse?!
The Black Wolf clan chief stared at one of the few white wolf cubs in the village and touched its forehead.
Strange. No fever. So why was it screaming as though it were being roasted alive?
The clan shaman said it was a premature, freakish little cub. It looked more like one of the white dogs raised in the neighboring village. Its younger brother wanted nothing to do with it, afraid the stupid wolf might be contagious.
The white wolf cub was not yet half a year old, and its fur was growing in. Its round, deep-blue eyes had become like a pool of still water as it gazed foolishly at Ye. It stretched out a soft paw and rubbed against the raised Adam's apple on the black wolf's neck.
Ye's heart softened under that gaze. He was just about to take in the little cub no other beastfolk liked when a sweet, girlish "Woof!" suddenly rang in his ear.
The air fell silent.

Everyone in the clan said he was just a little piece of trash the chief had picked up somewhere. They weren't even sure if he was a wolf or a dog.
Speaking in awkward beastfolk language, Qi Shi huffed. Trash? He would get back to what he knew best.
Farming, raising livestock, and building infrastructure.
Firing bricks, weaving cloth, and forging weapons.
One punch for every little piece of trash,
And no one under heaven would bully him again.
Great. Qi Shi, once the village bully, had risen to the top all over again in the beastfolk village. Countless beastfolk bowed to him, but the Black Wolf clan chief beat him to a pulp.
Qi Shi clutched his battered head and sat on Ye, his eyes brimming with tears. "I was wrong. Don't kick me out of bed."
