The Butterfly's Repeated Mistake

The day Jiang Miao met Xu Zhuo, rain fell without letup, and she was soaked through and utterly disheveled.

She pushed open the half-closed convenience store door and put the only money she had left on the counter. "I want a utility knife. A blade will do."

Xu Zhuo leaned lazily against his chair. "We don't have any."

Jiang Miao: "A needle, then."

Xu Zhuo: "Don't have one."

Jiang Miao: "So what do you have?"

Xu Zhuo: "Umbrellas and hot milk."

The second time Jiang Miao met Xu Zhuo was by Erhai Lake at sunset.

Without looking back, she walked farther into the water.

She wanted to die somewhere scenic. He refused to let her have her way.

"My life was a complete mess that day. You gave me twelve roses, and made me feel like maybe it wasn't so bad after all.", Jiang Miao
