Half a Lifetime of Joy

In the fairy tales adults tell themselves, salvation is the light that breaks through the dawn, the strength to escape one's shackles, the good fortune of emerging from one's cocoon transformed, and a chance to keep moving forward.

In the real world adults inhabit, salvation is a light you can never reach, ashes falling to the ground, and a calamity you can never forget.

--"I wish Song Zhiyan and I could spend our lives in happiness. What a pity. After struggling along for so long, all we managed to earn was half a lifetime of joy."
