Dual first loves.
A short story.
Updates are irregular, but I’ll finish it.
Zheng Yuzhu was a notorious laughingstock among A City’s wealthy elite.
She was vain and flighty, always looking to climb the social ladder.
The person most bothered by her was Zheng Guanming.
Zheng Yuzhu once pursued Zheng Guanming relentlessly, following him around like a dog’s tail.
Zheng Guanming couldn’t stand her and often played tricks on her.
Everyone said Zheng Yuzhu was delusional.
Even Liang Huai, Zheng Guanming’s upright, old-fashioned cousin, once said that Zheng Guanming and Zheng Yuzhu were a bad match, and told Zheng Guanming to stop seeing her.
Liang Huai came from an elite family. He was richer than Zheng Guanming and much more capable.
Zheng Guanming had always admired Liang Huai. He took his advice and cut off all contact with Zheng Yuzhu.
Later, at a drinking party with friends, someone brought up Zheng Yuzhu.
They’d heard that after graduating from university, she’d become an employee at Liang Huai’s company. His friends all teased Zheng Guanming, saying, “You can finally have some peace and quiet. But your cousin’s the one who’ll suffer now.”
Zheng Guanming scoffed. Zheng Yuzhu really was a fool. How could someone like her ever hope to win over Liang Huai, who was as untouchable as a flower on a high mountain?
Liang Huai had a proper girlfriend, and apparently they were headed for marriage.
Zheng Guanming guessed Liang Huai would absolutely despise Zheng Yuzhu. When his cousin could be ruthless, he wasn’t the type to go easy on a woman.
…
The next time Zheng Guanming saw Zheng Yuzhu was at a banquet.
She had her arm linked through a handsome man’s, standing close to him.
That man was Liang Huai.
Seeing his cousin’s astonished expression, Liang Huai kindly introduced her: “This is your sister-in-law.”
…
The usually close cousins Zheng Guanming and Liang Huai suddenly started fighting at the banquet.
The bewildered guests hurried to pull them apart.
They saw Zheng Guanming glaring at Liang Huai like a rabid dog, gritting his teeth as he demanded, “You once said Zheng Yuzhu and I weren’t right for each other.”
Zheng Guanming felt Liang Huai had made a fool of him.
Liang Huai remained calm and didn’t deny it. “That’s right. You two weren’t right for each other.”
“You’re not good enough for her.”
