A thousand years ago, Shen Wu, who had gone up the mountain to gather firewood, rescued a little fox. He cared for it devotedly, raising it until its fur was sleek and it was plump and adorable. The fox fell in love with him over time, but he never noticed. He even married a woman, and because of her, was forced to take the fox's life.
The fox considered them even and refused to leave, attaching itself to a statue of a god. It accepted offerings day after day and gradually cultivated into an evil god.
Heaven punished Shen Wu by barring him from reincarnation. But the little fox forcefully gave Shen Wu its own spirit and sent him onto the path to rebirth.
From then on, the little fox became a wandering ghost, while Shen Wu was fortunate enough to be reborn as a human. Yet evil spirits haunted him day and night, leaving him with the unlucky constitution of someone who attracts yin energy.
A thousand years later, Shen Wu kept running into ghosts and was so frightened he didn't dare close his eyes.
His roommate, Yu Yuanzhu, beckoned him over. "Would you like me, with my overwhelmingly yang constitution, to drive the ghosts away for you?"
Shen Wu nodded vigorously and obediently climbed into Yu Yuanzhu's bed.
"You have to get a little closer for it to work."
"Oh." Shen Wu threw his arms around him. "Is this close enough?"
