Ke Xi, a B-list actor, transmigrates into the Republican-era TV drama The Tale of Wanqing, in which she's currently acting.
The Tale of Wanqing is a story about a strong female lead getting revenge and taking down scumbags. The original heroine, Wanqing, was betrothed to her fiancé as a child. They married before he went abroad to study, but when he returned, he brought along a woman he adored and divorced Wanqing, throwing her out of the house.
But Wanqing isn't a weak woman who lets others walk all over her. She escapes from home, enrolls in a modern school, and gets into university. Born into a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, she combines Chinese and Western medicine and becomes a famous doctor in Shanghai, attracting the admiration of many talented young men.
Meanwhile, her ex-husband achieves nothing in either literature or martial arts. He quickly squanders all the money his family gives him, and once he's broke, the women around him all leave...
Ke Xi's role is just a naive, sweet girl who falls for the scumbag. She gives up studying abroad and returns to Shanghai for him, only to be framed and killed by other women who are also in love with him. As a background character who appears for less than ten minutes, the only script she has access to is the first ten episodes.
When she transmigrates, an ocean liner has just docked at the Shanghai pier. Nothing in the TV drama has happened yet, and this magical Eastern metropolis is opening its arms to people of all races...

The title comes from Ke Xi treating Shanghai as a grand stage, where she plays all kinds of roles. Putting on her makeup is the process of stepping into character.
Life is like a play, and a play is like life. She keeps her heart outside the drama and treats real life as a performance with no rehearsal.
In the end, the person outside the drama will eventually get drawn into it, and an onlooker can't necessarily stay clear-headed!
