Yang Liu is a university student from out of town. After graduating, she takes a job as a newspaper and magazine editor at a publishing house. A friend introduces her to Wang Xin, a soldier. Just as the two fall deeply in love, a problem sends their relationship into a tailspin. Wang Xin wants to transfer out of the military and remain in the city, so he has been looking for a local girl. After failing to connect with more than a dozen local women, he meets Yang Liu. He assumes that, as a university student, she can easily transfer her household registration to the city, only to discover that she doesn't meet the requirements. Wang Xin is torn: he loves Yang Liu, but cares more about his future prospects. Yang Liu is equally conflicted, struggling with what to do. While wrestling with uncertainty, she applies to transfer her household registration, and in the process encounters all kinds of people in the bureaucracy and endures one complication after another. Their relationship is tested repeatedly, too. After many twists and turns, her household registration is finally transferred to the city, but their love is no longer what it once was.
