[Tentatively updating every other day]
A poor scholar heads to the capital to take the imperial exams and encounters a white fox along the way.
His mother told him that foxes are demons that drain people of their vitality and yang energy, and that he must run if he ever encounters one. But this little fox he rescued is so adorable, and it doesn't seem like the sort of demon that would drain anyone's life force.
The poor scholar studies while caring for the injured little fox, and the two of them enjoy a happy life together.
Once the little fox recovers, it abandons the scholar and runs away.
His mother was right. Fox spirits really are heartless creatures.

A Daoist tells the poor scholar that he reeks of fox spirit, and that a fox spirit will soon drain his life force and kill him.
The scholar is bewildered. The little fox left long ago, and the only person living with him here is a young master in distress, forced by his family into an arranged marriage. Where's the fox spirit?
That unscrupulous Daoist must be trying to extort money from him. He can't be trusted. He absolutely mustn't fall for the Daoist's tricks.
