I'm a prisoner. I became a Death Eater just to protect myself, but Voldemort doesn't trust me. He's simply assigned someone else to keep an eye on me: Regulus Black. He's a kind jailer, but that kindness will get him killed sooner or later. If he dies, I probably won't survive either.
As he watches me, I watch him too. Saving his life means saving myself.
I know how to stay alive. Obedience is best, trading favors comes next, and sweet talk works too, but I must never cross the line. Even if Regulus orders me to kiss him, I'll do it. But if he gets himself killed, I won't go down with him.
So I saved him again, covered up his betrayal, and berated him for his ridiculous sense of honor.
Who would want to get themselves killed? I'd known him for barely over a year, and he still managed to get himself killed. I didn't even have time to stop him. So I angrily rummaged through his belongings, only to find a thick stack of letters he'd left me and a gift I'd always dreamed of owning.
