Many years later, as Sang Gui left the Zheng palace where she had lived for several years, she lifted the curtain and gazed into the distance. The sight before her felt so familiar, as if it had played out in her dreams hundreds, even thousands of times.
She pondered for a moment, then suddenly understood. Many, many years ago, on the day she married, hadn't she looked back at the walls of the Chen palace in just the same way?
The walls of the Chen palace, the walls of the Zheng palace, or the walls of any palace in this world, all looked alike. They formed a square, dividing the palace grounds, keeping outsiders from entering and forbidding those inside from leaving.
And she, leaving one palace wall only to enter another, going in and out, would spend her whole life locked within one palace city after another.
There was no way to avoid it, no way to escape.
