The ninth year of the Dunhua reign.
Midwinter. Heavy snow.
Night.
At the northernmost end of the Imperial Street's western side stood a mansion. The two characters "Lu Residence" on its signboard were a thick, vivid crimson.
Outside the gate stood a young woman in a white robe, holding a sword. A few flakes of snow clung to her waist-length hair.
Lu Rou's lashes quivered as she pushed open the gate.
In an instant, a sharp dagger pressed against her snow-white neck.
One inch closer, and her blood would spill across the Lu Residence that very day.
She smiled.
"Xu Qingyan's dogs really do have sharp noses."
Zhang Zhi curled his lip. He couldn't understand what the daughter of the former chancellor, Lu Rou, now a prisoner, had to be so proud of that she would call him a dog.
"The victor becomes king, the loser becomes a bandit. Miss Lu, no matter how sharp your tongue is, the eighteen households and one hundred and eight members of your Lu family still have to rely on my master's goodwill to survive."
"Is that so?" Lu Rou looked at the blade against her neck without a care and pressed farther into the dagger.
Zhang Zhi jolted, but the blade was sharp, and he couldn't pull it back in time.
A pebble suddenly shot through the air and struck Zhang Zhi's thumb.
His hand hurt, and he let go by reflex. The dagger fell into Fu Rou's right hand.
She curled her lips into a smile.
"Xu Qingyan. You still lost."
