Xu Wen hates anything that doesn't go according to plan.
His life plan is to progress steadily through elementary school, middle school, college, graduate school, and a doctorate; then stay on at the university to teach, lead a team, do research, apply for patents, and win the Nobel Prize. He'll get married and have children, live in harmony with his spouse, see his parents pass away, and then be seen off by his children.
He has even planned his epitaph: [Here lies an ordinary man. He lived in a time of peace and prosperity, made a small contribution to human science, and had a happy family. He was happy.]
If he hadn't gotten together with the boy next door at seventeen, he could have followed that smooth road all the way to the end.
But Zhou You was his own choice, and the effect on that smooth road was fairly limited. He only had to change “a happy family” on his epitaph to “a delicious lover and three cats and two dogs, as requested by Zhou You.” That was perfectly acceptable.
Xu Wen always thought that Zhou You was the only unexpected thing life had in store for him.
Until he received Zhou You's breakup notice.
Until he was pulled into one strange world after another.
Until he saw the dead return to the living world, transformed into walking corpses wandering city streets...
Until he discovered that Zhou You was slowly losing his body heat too.
He hid Zhou You away, tried to train a zombie the way you would train a dog, and optimistically believed that avoiding zombie infection was no different from avoiding rabies.
Until the zombie hordes swept across the world.
Until the color faded from Zhou You's eyes and his flesh fell away, and he stood at the end of the road, casting one last look at the mortal world. Xu Wen would still remember that distant afternoon from his youth:
The cicadas droned loudly as he left the lab, tilted his head back, and searched for the deep blue sky among the leaves.
His lover, dressed in white, stood at the end of the tree-lined path, smiling and waving to him.
