As a proper chuunibyou, I've had a martial arts fantasy ever since I was little.

After cramming a dozen or so high-martial-arts, low-magic novels, I came to a painful conclusion: those who practice martial arts basically can't beat cultivators.

After some serious soul-searching, I picked out a Taoist temple, sent my senior a resume overnight, and planned out my new life:

Three years to Foundation Establishment, five years to Divine Transformation, and ten years to reach the Great Perfection stage. I'd become the greatest cultivator of the 21st century!

The next night, my senior told me my resume had been accepted.

When I reached the foot of the mountain and saw that stinking Taoist priest wearing sunglasses and leaning on a long pole, pretending to be some kind of mystic, I suddenly missed home.

My already shaky materialist worldview took blow after blow.

In the underworld, trees were thick with human heads. Beneath a bell tower that had stood for a hundred years, a wicked jiao dragon was imprisoned. A pine tree that had lived an age beyond counting in the Taoist temple could recite sutras. And then a handsome young man calling himself a disciple of Shangqing came to ask me about the Dao.

I'm really starting to believe in science more and more.

When I went back seven years, I met an infuriating little kid.

She looked like a rebel. She was always the last to arrive at school, her backpack was always flat, her expression always sour, and she was always alone.

As a warmhearted, upright, and helpful young person of the 21st century, I finally called out to her the fifth time she tried to climb over the school wall to sneak off to an internet cafe. Then I followed her, earnestly advising her to study hard.

The kid tripped and fell. She got up, looked at me impatiently, and said, "Auntie, you're so annoying."

If she hadn't looked exactly like me as a child, I would have wanted to give her a good smack.

But she was me, after all, so I crouched down in front of her and gently advised, "Hey, brat. If you keep acting up, I'll dig up that out-of-print comic you hid under the sixth tree to the right of the school gate and tear it to shreds."

The brat reluctantly followed me. After putting up with me as long as she could, she finally asked with a scowl, "Hey, you unreliable weirdo. When are you leaving?"

I patted her head and replied kindly, "The day you get back to first place."

The brat slapped my hand away.

Later, the brat really did make it back to first place. And I knew that the rainstorm that had lasted seven years had finally stopped.
