At first, Zheng Yiwei didn't think much of Yan Jiashi.
He was the grandson of her grandfather's old army buddy and had once stayed with them. Beyond that, the young heiress had no connection with him.
As for when their relationship changed, it was two years ago, when Zheng Yiwei made the mistake every woman makes, and Yan Jiashi was the one involved.
Yan Jiashi was exceptionally handsome, lived a restrained private life, was quiet in bed, and knew how to please her. For Yiwei, who was experiencing sex for the first time, he was impossible to resist.
So they agreed to meet three times a week.
By now, all she wanted was to get tired of him soon, then cut things off cleanly and decisively.
On the absurd evening when Yan Jiashi's application to study abroad for his doctorate came through, Yiwei bent down, picked up their scattered clothes one by one, got dressed, and suggested they part on good terms.
The light was dim. Yan Jiashi lowered his head and gripped her wrist. "Can you really act like none of this ever happened?"
Yiwei didn't look back. Of course she could.

Once their relationship ended, Yiwei felt relieved.
On the night of her twenty-second birthday banquet, Zheng Yiwei was so drunk she was barely conscious. In a daze, she glimpsed a familiar silhouette amid the dazzling lights.
When she woke again, Yiwei could make out his face: a high nose, deep-set features, and vivid blue eyes. It was Yan Jiashi.
He knelt beside the bed, wiping her skin inch by inch with a silk handkerchief. He was so careful he seemed like a fanatical believer, reverently facing his god.
"Baby, I love you so much."
"Baby, don't leave me. You mustn't leave me, understand?"

Yan Jiashi knew he was sick:
He had developed an extremely pathological, frenzied obsession with someone. He began to crave the scent of her occupying the air, the slightest touch from her, and every time she looked down at him from above. Later, his desires overflowed like floodwaters bursting through a dam...
He believed he and Zheng Yiwei were born to become one.
He was willing to become a dog who wagged his tail and begged for affection from Zheng Yiwei alone.
"I want to possess her, and I want her to possess me. I want to claim every part of her, her body, breath, heart, and every inch of her skin. Better yet, I want to merge into her bloodstream and live as one with her."
