If time could flow backward, Lin Shu would never have chosen to step into that tavern.
As a gamer who never paid much attention to what happened later in the story, Lin Shu knew only that Scaramouche wanted to kill the Traveler.
With that in mind, after transmigrating to Sumeru, Lin Shu hid wherever he could, doing his best to avoid the main story.
Then, at the age when he feared Scaramouche most, he ran into him.
What he didn't know was that the one standing before him was the most innocent and kindhearted Kabukimono. Later, Kabukimono disappeared.
While Lin Shu regretted his loss, his life gradually returned to normal.
Then, on a forum one day, he saw Scaramouche, whom he hadn't seen in a long time.
"Long time no see, Lin Shu." Scaramouche smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. Though bright, they held a bone-chilling coldness. "I remember you being pretty afraid of me."
With his vision going black, Lin Shu decided to carry on as usual, focus on getting his thesis published, and then make a run for it.
Then he noticed that his experimental plants were growing more and more listless by the day.
Realizing something was wrong, Lin Shu kept watch all night and finally caught someone hiding in the test plots.
Scaramouche, who had just happened to be passing by and was busy tormenting the plants, looked utterly unbothered as he sneered at Lin Shu without saying a word.
How terrifying!
Lin Shu decided he needed to find someone powerful to rely on.
For example, the Great General Mahamatra. Or the Acting Grand Sage. Or, better yet, the divine being who lived in the Sanctuary of Surasthana.
Before long, Scaramouche finally realized that the mortal he had been free to bully seemed to have made quite a few friends.
