Everyone in the sect knew that Yun Qingyao and Yue Wangsheng were mortal enemies.
Yun Qingyao never denied it.
After all, she and Yue Wangsheng had both studied under Dao Lord Yun Cang and cultivated the Dao of Ruthlessness.
But Yue Wangsheng was skilled at wearing the bones of an immortal and the skin of a sage. He seemed gentle and refined, but deep down he was cynical, weary, and indifferent to the mortal world.
Yun Qingyao did not agree with his path.
Yet the cultivation world believed the path Yue Wangsheng pursued was the orthodox way of the immortals.
Heaven and earth are not benevolent. They treat all things like straw dogs.
By then, the conflict between Yun Qingyao and Yue Wangsheng could no longer be resolved. Only one of them could inherit the orthodox tradition, and Yun Qingyao knew full well that the odds were against her.
Until one absurd dream.
Yue Wangsheng fell in love with a fox demon, destroyed his own Dao heart for her, and turned his back on the immortal sect. In the end, she abandoned him by the banks of the Luo River.
Dao Lord Yun Cang, consumed by inner demons and unaware of his own love, lost his mind after killing the fox demon. He slaughtered the entire Supreme Taixuan Sect and went mad until his death.
The immortal path fell into decline, while the demonic path flourished.
Yun Qingyao attained union with the Dao amid the calamity and perished together with the Demon Lord Fenji.
Yun Qingyao: "...This has to be a lie."
But later, she discovered that the dream had not been false.
Yue Wangsheng was about to leave the sect and flee to the demonic realm with the fox demon. Her master wanted to take his life, but became trapped in the demon's lair and fell into a torturous romance with the fox demon.
After much deliberation, Yun Qingyao decided to hunt down Yue Wangsheng herself on her master's behalf and kill the fox demon while she was at it.
*
Many years later.
Yun Qingyao became a Dao Lord who guarded a region.
She struck Yue Wangsheng down beside the Luo River, killed her master after he fell to the demonic path at the Ascension Tower, and executed the fox demon with her sword. No one under Heaven could stand against her.
No one, that is, except Fenji, the lord of the demonic path.
The immortal and demonic paths clashed.
Yun Qingyao pointed her sword at the demons and split open his bronze mask. Beneath it was a stunning, bewitching face, and every movement seemed to belong to someone she had once known.
*
Before the Demon Lord Fenji began cultivating, someone had read his fate: his heart was as unfeeling as a stone, his appearance like a mad demon, and he was destined to have no place on the immortal path.
He did not believe in fate.
A thousand years passed, and he stood at the peak of the immortal path, just one step away from attaining union with the Dao.
Then he met Yun Qingyao.
The frail child who had struggled through wind and snow to become his disciple was the only person in the world worthy of ascending to immortality.
He gazed down at her for a long time, then finally accepted her as his disciple.
From that day on, he was Yue Wangsheng, Dao Lord Yun Cang, and the fox demon.
Fenji had created his own nemesis with his own hands, never imagining that one day he would willingly lay down his life beneath her sword.
Since ancient times, love and hate have been entwined, and old debts and grievances have been hard to settle together.
